PART 2 (Genre: My Failure Story)
– Mishearing –
In my college English class the other day, I had a Dictation Quiz to correctly write down an English sentence that a professor read out loud on an answer sheet. It might be rare for native English speakers to mishear English, but I, a Japanese student, often do as I did in the Dictation Quiz:
“Are your family members all ready?”
I’m not sure why I didn’t notice the easy mistake right after I heard this professor’s sentence, but actually the letters “R” and “L” make confusing sounds for me to distinguish. I misheard it and wrote down SOMETHING SILLY:
“Are your family members all ‘lady?’”
In that class, I learned the difference between “R” and “L” very well.
